Our lawyers are headed to Federal Court next week, face to face with the RCMP. We’re demanding accountability after a nearly seven-year delay in our complaint against the RCMP for illegal surveillance of climate organizations and Indigenous land defenders. In November 2020, we launched our lawsuit against the RCMP Commissioner for extreme delays in responding to public complaints. On September 21 and 22, we’ll be in hearings at the Federal Court. Our lawyers will show the court how delays have plagued the complaints system for over a decade, and how the RCMP Commissioner can frustrate the complaints process by sitting on reports for years on end.

Sexual harassment settlements

In October 2016,the RCMP commissioner apologized for what he referred to as “shameful conduct” by the organization. An internal investigation determined that up to 20,000 female officers and civilian employees since 1974, may have been the victim of harassment, discrimination, and/or sexual abuse.

On July 8, 2019 the National Post announced that a $100 million settlement was reached in a class-action lawsuit against the RCMP for sexual harassment. Compensation for proven claims over the 45-year period would range from $10,000 to $222,000 each.

The 2016 settlement for $100 million covered female officers who had been sexually harassed in the RCMP since September 1974. A second settlement in 2019 for $100 million was for women in non-policing roles at the RCMP.

We could go on but you get the picture and the need for a dress uniform colour change.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced Thursday that the province will implement mandatory masking, a proof of vaccination policy and a requirement for government employees to get vaccinated or receive negative tests.

Saskatchewan had the highest COVID 19 case rates per capita over a seven-day period as of Thursday, and the second-lowest vaccination rates among provinces.

On Wednesday, Premier Jason Kenney announced new COVID 19 measures, including limits on social gatherings and strict regulations on businesses, workplaces and places of worship and a new proof-of-vaccination program where Albertans will be required to provide proof of immunization or a negative COVID-19 test to enter certain establishments where the business has agreed to comply with the program.

Alberta, which has the highest case rates and the lowest vaccination rates in the country, declared a public state of emergency Wednesday.

In “Indian in the Cabinet, Speaking Truth to Power,” Wilson Raybould suggests that while the Trudeau government has considered the question closed, the SNC-Lavalin affair may not be over.

“I knew what he was really asking. What he was saying. In that moment, I knew he wanted me to lie – to attest that what had occurred had not occurred,” Wilson-Raybould said.

Trudeau in response said,“I did not want her to lie. I would never do that. I would never ask her that,” he said. “That is simply not true.”

The People’s Party of Canada has kicked out the head of a southern Ontario riding association in the wake of the gravel-throwing incident involving Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. 

In an email to Global News, party spokesperson Martin Masse said Shane Marshall, the president of the party’s Elgin Middlesex London riding association, is no longer with the People’s Party of Canada.

His removal comes amid allegations he threw gravel at the Liberal leader while at a campaign stop in London, Ont., on Monday.

Far from being reassured by Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole’s statement yesterday regarding the ban on semi-automatic assault weapons, our organizations – representing physicians, scientists, survivors of gun violence, and anti-hate researchers – are further alarmed.   Mr. O’Toole has not committed to maintaining the assault weapons ban, nor has he committed to enshrining the ban in legislation and preparing to buyback the now-prohibited guns. Mr. O’Toole has only committed to studying the ban as part of a review of the classification system of firearms. Yet, on page 90 of the Conservative Party platform, he commits specifically to consulting with gun manufacturers and gun owners. There is no such mention of survivors, physicians, women, anti-hate researchers, scientists, or academics.   Finally, on page 90 of the Conservative platform, Mr. O’Toole has committed to repealing Bill C-71, legislation that, among other important measures, strengthens background checks on new gun purchasers.

Noted: Fred Delorey, who is currently the Conservative national campaign manager. was registered to lobby on behalf of the National Firearms Association (NFA) until resigning in 2019.

The last soldier to leave Afghanistan on the day the U.S. concluded its 20-year war has been identified as Major General Chris Donahue, commander of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division, XVIII Airborne Corps. Donahue was one of the commanders on the ground leading the evacuation mission.
