Aliqa Kanangnak Illauq was born and raised in the Baffin region of Nunavut. Her father, Jushua Illauq, is from the Apitak family which settled in the Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet) and Kangirtugaapik (Clyde River) area. A student of Carleton’s Law and Human Rights program, Illauq is committed to social justice for Inuit, Métis and First Nations peoples.

Inuqatigitiarrupta kisulirmat ajungnangituq – as much as we connect well, everything is possible,” said Illauq, speaking in both Inuktitut and English.

What the Inuit Elders want:

1. They want the land to not be ruined anymore, 2. Stop Baffinland’s Mary River phase 2 project, 3. Baffinland has proven themselves to be the wrong company to mine on our land, 4. If mining must be done as approved by the Nunavut Land Claim Agreement, replace Baffinland with a company who is respecting the land, ocean, animals, and people.

“The land is our blood, if it dies, we will die as a people and will become weak” – Manitok Bruce-Thompson
