eclipsed expectations…

Court Painter recently had the opportunity to do major portrait commissions from the Mar A Lago Club with rabid guest Lady Roseanne and owner The Donald in celebration of and in advance of the upcoming solar eclipse .

The portait of the Donald captures the teachings of the former president in the moment of how to look directly into the solar eclipse without 3D glasses or binoculars. Everyone is anticipating a repeat performance on April 8/24.

Lady Roseanne’s portaits unfortunately don’t capture the fiesty, rabid and frothy demeanor of the former TV star however do convey a sense of royal charm. She graciously posed before a past due date portait of preppy Donald and the new historically relevant replacement by Court Painter.

Court Painter decided that a simple frontal portait of Lady Roseanne holding a huge glass of wine with #45 would also be a wonderful momento for these divisive times.

So Court Painter whipped off a painting that takes into account the informal and slovenly friendship of Lady Roseanne and the former president.

How Fascism Typically Takes Over a Nation by Rhetoric…

Words. Speeches. News conferences. Rallies. Media. Money. And they all point in one direction: violence in service of the fascist leader.

THOM HARTMANN MAR 29

Analysts of fascism from Umberto Eco to Hannah Arendt to Timothy Snyder and Ruth Ben-Ghiat generally agree on a core set of characteristics of a fascist movement. It includes:

— A romantic idealization of a fictional past (“Make America Great Again”)

— Clear definition of an enemy within that is not quite human but an “other” (“vermin,” “rats,” “animals,” all phrases Trump has used just in past weeks to describe immigrants and employees of our criminal justice system)

— Vilification of the media (“fake news” or lugenpresse)

— Repeated attacks on minorities and immigrants as a rallying point for followers (shared hatred often binds people together)

— Disparagement of elections and the rule of law (because neither favors the fascist movement)

— Glorification of political violence and martyrdom (the January 6th “patriots” and Ashley Babbitt)

— Hostility to academia and science leading to the elevation of Joe Sixpack’s ability to “do his own research” (simple answers to complex questions or issues)

— Embrace of fundamentalist religion and the moral codes associated with it

— Rejection of the rights of women and members of the queer community as part of the celebration of toxic masculinity

— Constant lies, even about seemingly inconsequential matters (Hannah Arendt noted in 1978: “If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer.”)

— Performative patriotism that replaces the true obligations of citizenship (like voting and staying informed) with jingoistic slogans, logos, and mass events: faux populism

— Collaboration with oligarchs while claiming to celebrate the average person

Donald Trump and his MAGA movement check every single box.

Remember Trump received about 74 million votes in the 2020 presidential election, according to the Federal Election Commission. That’s almost 47% of the popular vote. He won 232 electoral votes – 270 are needed to win.

(Note: The list has grown since this image was created)

Conservatives won’t be taking advice from “so-called experts” when it comes to carbon pricing, the party said in a statement Wednesday after more than 200 economists signed an open letter challenging leader Pierre Poilievre’s stance.

Instead, the party is pledging to listen to the “common sense of the common people.”

“Common sense Conservatives will listen the common sense of the common people, not Justin Trudeau’s so-called ‘experts,’” Sebastian Skamski, a spokesperson for Poilievre, said in a statement Wednesday.

A Common Sense Explainer:
There are common sense known knowns, things we know common sensically that we know ; and there are common sense known unknowns, things that we common sensically know we don’t know .But there are also, using common sense, unknown unknowns, things we do not know we don’t know .If you have any common sense!

“There are known knowns, things we know that we know; and there are known unknowns, things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns, things we do not know we don’t know.”
― Donald Rumsfeld, Known and Unknown

Jagmeet Singh and PM Trudeau continue on with the wild ride.

Harper to foreign affairs in a Poilievre government?

“The appointment of Stephen Harper as minister of foreign affairs under a Poilievre government represents more than just a political maneuver; it is a bold declaration of Canada’s readiness to assume a pivotal role in shaping global affairs.

Harper’s role as chair of the International Democrat Union (IDU) — an alliance fostering links among centre-right parties worldwide — further amplifies his global influence. In today’s climate, where conservative governments are gaining prominence, his extensive network through the IDU could serve Canada well, providing unparalleled access and insights into the machinations of global conservative leadership.”

pristine viewscapes…

The Alberta government has said wind energy projects have a negative impact on “unobstructed, natural landscapes” and has banned new turbines along all of Alberta’s eastern slopes.

With wind energy likely off the table in large swaths of the province — and new restrictions on solar farms in others — here’s a look at some of the things Albertans can still do in those “unobstructed, natural landscapes.”

1. Urban sprawl is continuing in Alberta’s draft ‘pristine viewscape’ regions

2. Logging applications are ongoing in Kananaskis Country — now off limits to new wind energy projects

3. A new pulp mill is being celebrated by the government just outside of Jasper National Park

4. Coal mining is not explicitly prohibited under Alberta’s new draft ‘pristine viewscape’ plans

5. There are no blanket bans on what landowners can do with their land, from RV storage fields to mega mansions

6. Drilling for oil and gas continues across much of the province, including in wind energy no-go zones

7. Fracking is using increasing amounts of water in areas off-limits to new wind energy projects

Let me paint a picture…

“Let me paint a picture for you. It’s a picture of school children setting safely off to school in the morning — their parents no longer worried about their safety. It’s a picture of a family sitting in their living room with their doors unlocked, because they’re no longer afraid of their neighbourhood. Seniors leaving the grocery store, putting groceries in their car with change in their pockets. A shopkeeper cleans the front of his shop, knowing that he will be rewarded for the risks he is taking the rest of the day. It’s a picture of Legionnaires sweeping up a grave and leaving fresh flowers to honour the soldiers who gave their lives in battle. This is the sound of mothers yelling out to their kids, ‘it’s bedtime!’, and those kids yelling right back ‘ten more minutes!’ as they try to play some more street hockey, and then all of a sudden, quiet. And there, on a front porch, is a young couple, with a Canadian flag hanging from the railing of a home they own which they bought with a beautiful paycheque. And their eyes will meet and they look at each other in a way that only they know. All the hard work paid off. The Canadian promise is their story. Because finally we are home. These are our people. That is our country. This is our home. “

Speech attributed to Pierre Poilievre : Federal Conservative Leader of the Opposition and aspiring Prime Minister

Source: The Halifax Examiner,March 18/24

As a public service the Court Painter and his trusty Press Attache AHM have rewritten the aspiring prime minister’s speech to give it more punch and veracity.

Let me paint a picture for you. It’s a picture of school children setting off to school in the morning, their parents anxiously fretting about safety amidst the threats of human misdeeds, social media, floods, wildfires, hurricanes, rising tides, extreme storms, glacier melts and droughts. It’s a picture of a family sitting in their living room, their doors locked, because they feel the unease in their neighbourhood, with the spectre of social mistrust and climate change disruptions looming.

Seniors leaving the grocery store, putting overpriced groceries into their car with only spare change in their pockets; absorbing their world reshaped by price gouging and profitering: backgrounded by environmental upheavals never experienced in their formative years.

A shopkeeper diligently tidies the front of his shop, aware of the risks posed by natural disasters but undeterred as he has bought a new generator, reinforced his windows and roof knowing that he will be rewarded in the face of the risks he might face the rest of his life. It’s a picture of Legionnaires sweeping up a grave and leaving fresh flowers to honour the soldiers who gave their lives in battle, a timeless ritual amidst the ever present global conflicts filling more graves.

This is the sound of mothers yelling out to their kids, ‘it’s bedtime!’, and those kids yelling right back ‘ten more minutes!’ as they try to play some more street hockey, and then all of a sudden, quiet… as they return to their screens confronting them with toxic algorithms and the precarious social and physical balancing act between truth, lies and political phantasies they cohabit.

And there, on a front porch, is a young couple, with a Canadian flag on their railing fluttering in tatters from the recent hurricane nearby, now symbolizing the resilience of a nation amid adversity and political shortsightedness. And their eyes will meet and they look at each other in a way that only they know. All their hard work still has not paid off.

The fragile Canadian promise, once distant, is now their surreal reality. This Canadian promise is their story. Finally, they are home. These are our people. This is our country. These are our homes, amidst the realities of bad faith politicians, lies, misinformation, drug deaths, wildfires, rising tides, extreme storms, melting icecaps ,droughts and the sounds of distant wars ever closer!
