has-dark-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-ddac67d8d7cdcbf5866c402cc756d62d wp-block-paragraph\"> On May 13, Nova Scotia Power sent a letter telling 280,000 customers their name, address, email, and banking information may have been published on the<strong> dark web <\/strong>by a \u201cthreat actor\u201d after the company refused to pay a ransom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-yellow-color has-dark-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-d465eb62cce3fb93a460a6b579a4beca wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In addition, it told 140,000 customers who had provided the company with their Social Insurance Numbers (SINs) they could be particularly vulnerable to scams and identity theft now that some information had been published on the dark web.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politicians pressed the Nova Scotia Power president on why the company collected and saved that information in the first place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-rounded\"><img href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/employment-social-development\/services\/sin\/reports\/code-of-practice.html\">laws and directives<\/a>&nbsp;from Service Canada advise private companies not to ask for SINs as a way of verifying an individual\u2019s identity, and <strong><em>customers are never legally required to provide their SIN information to anyone except Service Canada and their bank.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/employment-social-development\/services\/sin\/reports\/code-of-practice.html\">&nbsp;<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-yellow-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-4725afdbe2436839b2d3d6469f5e2b87 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#121515\"><strong>\u201cWhy has Nova Scotia Power been has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-c39d327043e05db6b80803c941a99517 wp-block-paragraph\">Reporters did learn from Gregg that Nova Scotia Power stopped collecting and asking for SINs about five years ago.
