\u201cIt seems to me that morality has always depended on there being a difference between saying something and doing it: saying I am a good person and then doing a good action,\u201d she says. This distinction, she believes, has been eroded in our digital world, where you are what you tweet. Five years ago she quit all social media and hasn\u2019t looked back. \u201cI think that it is distorting human nature,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s altering the way that we think. It\u2019s altering the way that we exist in time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She compares tweeting to \u201cthrowing a paper dart into the void\u201d with no idea who that dart will hit or any obligation to follow up. \u201cThere\u2019s no engagement with all of the more human emotional considerations that would come into an actual debate. It\u2019s no wonder that these things become so poisonous and so polarized and so insoluble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
