In the classical definition of capitalism, private actors accumulate and exchange assets through the free market, at prices determined by supply and demand. Gates&#8217; version of capitalism would better be called monopolistic. Gates&#8217; wealth is a direct result of the patents that codified Microsoft&#8217;s intellectual property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As such, it isn&#8217;t surprising that <strong>one of Gates&#8217; core beliefs is that intellectual property needs to be protected at all costs \u2014 and that eliminating patent restrictions for vaccines violates this guiding principle.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/allanhardingmackay.ca\/courtpainter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-28-at-12.24.56-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15991\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allanhardingmackay.ca\/courtpainter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-28-at-12.24.56-PM.png 900w, https:\/\/allanhardingmackay.ca\/courtpainter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-28-at-12.24.56-PM-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/allanhardingmackay.ca\/courtpainter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-28-at-12.24.56-PM-768x434.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though Gates sanctifies intellectual property rights, surely he would be willing to override this view in order to protect poor countries from Covid. Indeed, given that his foundation prominently proclaims that &#8220;all lives have equal value,&#8221; one might expect this \u2014 even more so given that Gates is a self-identified utilitarian, someone whose moral values elevate the ends (saving lives) over the means (compromising a principle).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this is where it gets more complicated. As a philanthropist, Gates is a founding member of a cohort of benefactors who believe that pursuing profit is not incompatible with social good.
